NO MOW MAY
At their May 9, 2022 regular meeting, the Mantorville City Council discussed the idea of not mowing lawns in May, as a way to create habitat for bees and other pollinators that have been in decline for years. By not mowing lawns in May, the idea is that it will increase pollen and other foraging resources for pollinators that are emerging from dormancy. This initiative is promoted through Bee City USA.
Residents in Mantorville may obtain a free yard sign (1 per address) from Mantorville City Hall, 21 5th Street East, Mantorville. You may also download and print your own sign from the Bee City USA website. Participants within the Mantorville city limits must register their address with the City by sending an email to the City of Mantorville with the subject “No Mow May,” include their name and address, and state that they intend to participate. Those participating simply refrain from mowing their lawns during the month of May or limit mowing to once or twice during the month of May. The City will refrain from enforcing weed and lawn height ordinances for residents that participate, as long as they are displaying the “No Mow May” sign in their yard, in plain view from the street. Lawns must be mowed back to required heights, and ordinance enforcement will resume, after June 1 each year.
